What is MS?
Multiple Sclerosis is a condition of the brain and spinal cord. It is a result of damage to myelin – a protective sheath which surrounds the nerve fibres of the central nervous system. When myelin is damaged this interferes with the messages between the brain and other parts of the body.
Some of the symptoms of MS are immediately obvious. Reduced mobility is often the most visually apparent. Other symptoms such as fatigue, changes in sensation, memory and concentration problems are often ‘hidden’ symptoms and can be difficult to explain to others.
Currently there are over 9000 people in Ireland living with MS.
MS Ireland
MS Ireland is the national organisation providing information, vital services and support to the MS community. We provide a wide range of specialised services and resources on a national, regional and local level. Services include; Regional Community Worker programmes for one-to-one support; physiotherapy; symptom management courses; newly diagnosed sessions and the MS Information Line, one of the first services used in the time leading up to or following a diagnosis. We also provide the only national respite and therapy centre for people with MS in Ireland.
More than two-thirds of the 9,000 people living with MS in Ireland access these resources. All those affected by the condition rely on MS Ireland to advocate on their behalf on any issues which will impact their quality of life.
#9000 Balloons - Virtual Balloon Race for MS Ireland to mark World MS Day
Our aim is to sell 9000 balloons, one to represent each of the individuals currently living with MS in Ireland. This campaign was born out of these uncertain and difficult times we currently face. For the 9000 plus people living with the condition the services of MS Ireland are needed more than ever. By buying a balloon you are helping to keep our services running for them.
Not only that, but you are also part of a worldwide MS awareness campaign. World MS Day is officially marked on 30 May. It brings the global MS community together to share stories, raise awareness and campaign with everyone affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). World MS Day activities take place throughout the month of May and in early June. Learn more »
We need your help today more than ever. Buy a balloon and show your solidarity with the MS Community.
